Choosing the right course after your Leaving Certificate

August 13, 2015

If you are looking for a Post Leaving Certificate (PLC) course that will help your employment prospects or help you gain entry into University then advice and guidance is at hand.  CDETB has 16 Colleges of Further Education across the city offering more than 400 first class PLC courses.

Coláiste Dhúlaigh, for example, has a member of their guidance staff on standby this week on their Coolock campus to meet with students and parents.  Coláiste Dhúlaigh is also running an information session on its Coolock Campus Friday 21st August – ‘How to succeed in your PLC interview’.

All Further Education courses interview for places.  The courses are usually of one or two years in duration.  They are open to those with a Leaving Certificate or an equivalent qualification.  Some courses require a basic level in English and Maths and/or in school subjects to submit a portfolio of work.  Performance courses may audition applicants as part of the selection process.  Further Education courses are also open to mature students subject to Leaving Certificate standard of education or suitable life/work experience.

Students who choose a PLC course do so because they discover it most closely meets their area of interest. That might be in Technology, Science, Business Studies, Computing, Sport, Mountain Leadership, Drama, Media, Catering, Beauty – the range is wide and surprising.

Other reasons students choose PLC courses include:
• They want a job
• They want to explore their choice of career further before committing to, for example, a four year degree path.
• They want to explore a new subject area.
• They want to study as locally as possible.
• They want a cost effective course.
• They want more emphasis on the practical
• They want immediate work experience
• They want to explore an alternative route to third level
