Ballyfermot College to the fore in animation success story

April 27, 2015

An Post recently issued four stamps to celebrate the success of Animation Ireland. The stamps incorporate augmented reality technology, and by downloading  the “Cee Explorer App” they can be scanned with a smartphone to view additional content.

Animation Ireland is a group of leading Irish animation studios working together to promote and market Ireland’s world class animation sector.

The stamps represent the work of four animation studios.  Three of these studios Brown Bag, Cartoon Saloon, Jam Media were founded by Ballyfermot graduates and the fourth studio Geronimo employs many BCFE graduates.

The work of these studios is already well known internationally.  Brown Bag received an Oscar Nomination in 2002 for ‘Give up your auld sins’ and a second nomination for ‘Granny O’ Grimm’ in 2010.  Cartoon Saloon also received two Oscar nominations; for ‘The Secret of Kells’ in 2010 and ‘Song of the Sea’ this year.  Roy, produced by Jam Media, was awarded the coveted 2012 Children’s BAFTA Drama Award.

All in all the stamp issue is a welcome recognition of the Irish animation industry and highlights the role played by Ballyfermot College since 1987 when the first animation course was established in the college.
