Animation students from Ballyfermot College of Further Education joined aspiring animators from all over Europe at an international animation festival in Lille, France in March. BCFE is the first animation school to represent Ireland at this prestigious student animation festival .
Six students from BCFE’s BA in Animation were fully-funded to take part in the week-long Fete de L’Anim in Lille, alongside students from France, Denmark, Belgium, Germany and England.
Students Gráinne Hegarty, Padraic Byrne and Stephen Cunningham participated in a creative challenge to produce a 10 second animated piece in 48 hours. The students were given a key image by an animation professional and they then embarked on the marathon animation session, which was later screened at the Rencontres Audiovisuelles, the digital hub in Lille.
Three other BCFE students (Darragh Herlihy, Emma Kinsella and Killian McDonagh) took part in a video mapping workshop whereby they had to create a 30 second digital video that was later projected onto the fascade of the Lille Opera House and viewed by 6000 people.
The students enjoyed masterclasses with leading international animators including creative genius Michel Ocelot. BCFE Computer Animation tutor Denise Moylan said: “It was a fantastic opportunity for the students to meet with these giants from the animation industry and to immerse themselves in the creative process with like-minded students from all over Europe.”
BCFE Principal Maureen Conway said: “I’m so proud of the students’ achievements. It was an honour for them to be invited to this spectacular student event. We look forward to participating again in 2016.”
