Congratulations to the 1st year students of Cabra Community College who have created a memorial garden for the whole school community and alumni. This idea came about due to the passing of one of their past pupils and the fact that many of the current students and staff have suffered bereavement. The students wanted an opportunity to provide a location for contemplation, reading and other activities. The students are attempting to reach out to the whole school community and alumni through this memorial garden.
Their mentor for this project was visual artist Jean Conroy and sadly this memorial garden has now also become a tribute to Jean who is no longer with us. The school is very fortunate to have Jean’s sister Mary, another socially engaged artist/maker with a strong environmental ethos, to take over Jean’s mentoring role. The school has benefited greatly from working with these two fantastic women who have helped bring the project to life.
The students and staff alike have learned an enormous amount from working on this project.
The school reflective space provides a peaceful location on the grounds for visitors to remember anyone they have lost in their lives. It is beautifully designed and a real haven or sanctuary. On 9th October the garden was formally opened by CEO Jacinta Stewart.
A big thank-you from Cabra CC to all who attended- including all staff, parents, people from the community, and representatives from other organisations.
If you missed the event – please drop in sometime to leave in a plant or flower in memory of a loved one.
